Surface fine structure of the rat subcommissural organ and reissners fiber

The ventricular surface of the rat subcommissural organ (SCO) was studied with scanning- (SEM) and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). SEM demonstrated the presence of many microvilli and cilia on the ependymal surface of the SCO. Thread-like or amorphous materials, which were probably secreted from ependymal cells, were found in the caudal portion of the SCO. These materials were further followed caudally to Reissner's fiber. Cilia may knead the secreted material and thus contribute to the formation of Reissner's fiber. No appreciable differences in the surface structure were noticed among male, estrous female and diestrous female rats. TEM presented structures comparable to those found in the SEM study.
