Synovial chondromatosis a report of 13 cases

Synovial chondromatosis a report of 13 cases

Zhonghua Guke Zazhi 5(5): 301-303

13 cases of synovial chondromatosis were reported. There were 8 men and 5 women with a mean age of 46.5 years (range 22-67 years). The lesions occurred in the knee joint (9 cases, 2 bilateral), the hip (1 case), the elbow (2 cases) and the ankle (1 case). 11 cases were operated upon and 7-110 loose bodies were removed. The largest one in X-ray film was 10 .times. 3 cm2. Synovial chondromatosis is a self-limiting disorder; the clinical diagnosis can be established in a joint containing 5 or more loose bodies, even when the synovial membrane is normal. Complete removal of the loose bodies is important in the treatment. Specimen of the synovium should be sent for histological examination, however, synovectomy is not necessary.
