Syntheses and nmr characterization of chelated heme models of hemo proteins

Convenient syntheses of 'chelated heme' compounds from naturally occurring hemes were described. NMR studies of the CO complex of chelated protoheme served to characterize this model compound in solution. Chelated protoheme, having a 'proximal' imidazole covalently attached, displayed spectra and kinetics and equilibria of reaction with dioxygen and CO that were similar to those of R-state Hb, making chelated protoheme unique among model compounds.
