Storage proteins of Hyphantria cunea were separated and confirmed and comparatively quantified during developmental stage. Also, synthesis and uptake of storage proteins were investigated using tissue culture and carbohydrates conjugated in storage proteins were analyzed by gas chromatography. Two storage proteins were analyzed by gas chromatography. Two storage proteins (SP1 and SP2) were found in the haemolymph and reached the peak in late last instar and drastically declined as soon as pupation whereas storage proteins of fat body were present in high concentration during the period of prepupal and pupal stages. SP1 is composed of one kind of subunit (76.7 K) while SP2 comprised of two kinds of subunits (74.1 K and 72.4 K). Storage proteins begin to be synthesized in the fat body after 2 hrs of tissue culture and reach the peak at 4 hrs and disappear thereafter whereas storage protein begins to release into medium at 6 hrs and reach the peak at 12 hrs. Storage proteins released are reabsorbed by fat body of prepupae, indicating that fat body functions as storage. During the synthesis of storage protein, Juvenile hormone III gives inhibiting effect above 10-6M while 20-hydroxyecdysone exhibits drastic inhibiting effect alone 10-8 M. Also, carbohydrate conjugated in storage proteins were analyzed. Storage protein-1 contains over 10% ribose and xylose while SP2 has over 10% ribose and galactose. And small amount of sugar was detected in both SP1 and SP2, too.
