Systematic position composition and origin of the family scombridae

Systematic position composition and origin of the family scombridae

Voprosy Ikhtiologii 21(2): 200-208

The suborder Scombroidei is viewed as being made up of 2 superfamilies; Scombroidea (with a single family Scombridae) and Trichiuroidea. Within the family Scombridae, 3 subfamilies were distinguished: Scombrinae (4 genera), Scomberomorinae (10 genera) and Thunninae (10 genera). Their characteristics and composition were described, with both modern genera and fossils included. The family Scombridae may originate from carangids dating back to the Cretaceous period.
