Systematics of cincinnatia winkleyi gastropoda hydrobiidae

, : Systematics of cincinnatia winkleyi gastropoda hydrobiidae. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 137(2): 28-47

Anatomical and ecological data are presented showing that so-called Amnicola winkleyi Pilsbry (1912) is a brackish-water species of Cincinnatia (Hydrobiidae: Nymphophilinae). It is not a species of Marstonia nor is it synonymous with Marstonia lustrica as previously thought (Thompson 1977). The species is distributed in coastal marshes from northern Massachusetts into Maine [USA], and is often sympatric with Spurwinkia sasa. The species lacks shell apical pitting characteristic of many other species of genera of the Nymphophilinae. As a result, only penial characters serve to differentiate the Nymphophilinae from the Hydrobiinae. It is suggested that the Nymphophilinae be reduced to tribal status. Nymphophilini, within the Hydrobiinae.
