Systematics of european crayfish decapoda astacidae proposal and justification

The proposed revised systematics of the European crayfishes lists 5 spp. (Astacus astacus, A. pachypus, A. leptodactylus, A. pallipes, A. torrentium). The genus Austropotamobius and the 4 subgenera of Bott (1950) of the genus Astacus (Astacus and Pontastacus) and of the genus Austropotamobius (Austropotamobius and Atlantoastacus) are abandoned. This proposal is based on a phylogenetic analysis comprising not only morphological character weighting including comparisons with neighbor groups (Nephropidae, Cambaridae), but also biological, zoogeographical and biochemical criteria. According to the pattern of infraspecific geographic and local variation, subspecies seem to be warranted only in the case of A. astacus (A. a. astacus, A. a. balcanicus and A. a. colchicus). All other forms previously described as species or subspecies are specified as variations.
