Systematics of the prenanthes roanensis complex asteraceae lactuceae

, : Systematics of the prenanthes roanensis complex asteraceae lactuceae. Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 111(3): 338-348

Numerical taxonomic analysis of character variation indicates that P. roanensis deserves status as a species distinct from but closely related to P. altissima and P. serpentaria and that P. cylindrica is synonymous with P. roanensis. All 3 spp. have a chromosome number of 2n = 8II, including a 1st report for P. roanensis. Cytological analysis of populations intermediate between species did not show any meiotic irreglarities that might be evidence of interspecific hybridization. All 3 spp. produce several flavonoid glycosides based on luteolin and apigenin but are not characterized by unique flavonoid profiles. The distribution of P. roanensis indicates that it is sufficiently numerous and widespread not to need protected status as a rare or threatened species.
