Taxonomic significance of seed coat morphology in eriocaulon linn. eriocaulaceae

Taxonomic significance of seed coat morphology in eriocaulon linn. eriocaulaceae

Seed Science and Technology 15(1): 297-310

Eriocaulon Linn. (Eriocaulaceae) is a taxonomically difficult genus. The high degree of similarity among its species makes identification difficult, especially in the dried state. Having experienced the difficulty, 19 species of the genus [E. cinereum, E. collinum, E. cuspidatum, E. dianae, E. edwardii, E. fluviatile, E. gamblei, E. lanceolatum, E. neesianum, E. odoratum, E. nilagirense, E. pectinatum E. quinquangulare, E. robustum, E. setaceum, E. sexangulare, E. truncatum, E. van heurckii, E. xeranthemum] from India were subjected to seed morphological studies. The study shows that although the micromorphology of the seed has great diversity, it remains constant for individual species. Within the genus seed surface characters can be used to identify species. Surface features of the species studied are annotated and illustrated. A key for their identification is also provided.
