Taxonomic studies in centaurea section calcitrapa part 3 cyto taxonomic notes

Taxonomic studies in centaurea section calcitrapa part 3 cyto taxonomic notes

Israel Journal of Botany 25(1-2): 84-89

New records of the diploid chromosome numbers of 7 taxa in Centaurea sect. Calcitrapa are presented [indicated * below]. The diploid number in C. iberica was counted as 2n = 20, which is incompatible with most former data. It is consequently suggested that C. iberica is a polymorphic complex. The karyological situation in the whole section [C. hyalolepis ssp. hyalolepis*, C. calcitrapa ssp. calcitrapa (var. macroacantha), C. iberica ssp. iberica, C. pungens, C. iberica ssp. meryonis*, C. pallescens ssp. pallescens*, C. pallescens ssp. calcitrapella* (var. calcitrapella, var. australis), C. pallescens ssp. kurnubensis*, C. procurrens ssp. procurrens*, C. procurrens ssp. sharonensis*] is briefly discussed. The dominant basic chromosome number in this section is x = 10, the genome is generally asymmetrical and most of the chromosomes are more or less acrocentric.
