Greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), populations differed in both distribution on the plant and reproduction when reared on water-stressed and well-watered sorghum, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, in an outdoor, caged-plant study. Greenbug populations on water-stressed plants were distributed toward the top of the plant, with 28.0% of the population found above midplant, 57.3% at midplant, and 14.7% below midplant. Populations on well-watered plants had a downward distribution, with 19.3% found above midplant, 33.6% at midplant, and 47.1% below midplant. Greenbug reproduction was reduced on water-stressed plants compared with populations on well-watered plants when the water potential of the stressed plants fell below -0.3 MPa. No evidence was found that greenbugs modified or maintained specific leaf water and osmotic potentials.
