The length and surface area of needles are greatest in 25- to 60-yr-old trees. The needle length is determined only by the number of cells. The resistance to CO2 diffusion into chloroplasts does not vary with increasing age of trees. In aging the relative volume of needle resiniferous tissues increases and the proportion of assimilative and conductive tissues remains invariable.
