The aminergic regulation of acth secretion
The complex interrelations between monoamines, such as norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine on the activity of the anterior lobe of the pituitary, probably via hypothalamic nuclei, and the influence thereon of such drugs as reserpine, chlorpromazine, etc., is the subject of this review of the neuroendocrinological and pharmacologic literature. The emphasis is on ACTH of the anterior pituitary and on the corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) for the hypothalamus, as they are affected by catecholamines and the corticosteroids released by the adrenal glands. Much of the pharmacological work underlying this review was performed on rats and dogs. The secretion of CRF-ACTH, in the rat and probably in the dog, appears to be inhibited by noradrenergic fibers originating from cell bodies in the bulbomesencephalic region which establish axodendritic connections with the cell bodies of the peptidergic neurons secreting CRF. Norepinephrine, liberated by these fibers then exercises its inhibitory effect. In turn, certain monoamines are able to stimulate the secretion of releasing factors of the hypothalamus by acting on the gland tissue via the general circulation.
