The capacity of avian fleas frontopsylla frontalis to infect rodents with the plague

The capacity of avian fleas frontopsylla frontalis to infect rodents with the plague

Meditsinskaya Parazitologiya i Parazitarnye Bolezni 45(1): 49-52

When fleas F. frontalis of the autumn emergence were fed on tamarisk gerbils (Meriones tamariscinus) inoculated with a typical virulent strain of the causative agent of plague, and subsequently regularly fed on M. tamariscinus, they seldom formed a block. F. frontalis were capable of retaining plague organisms in their bodies for a long time. Under laboratory conditions (temperature 16-20.degree. C, relative humidity 85-95%) and frequent feedings on rodents they formed a block at late intervals (maximum at 183 days), acquired the capacity to transmit the causative agent of plague to rodents.
