The catchment area of the general psychiatric clinic post graduate institute of medical education and research chandigarh punjab haryana india and its socio demographic profile

Bulletin Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research Chandigarh 10(4): 198-205

The demographic profile of the general population shows that the rural:urban ratio of the general population is 62:38 for males; 54:46 for females. Literacy percentage was 40.38%. Hindus constitute 62.41% and Sikhs 33.89% of the population. Workers constitute 30.48%. A study of the area of residence of the patients shows that in 1974, 24.26% came from Chandigarh; 46.08% from Punjab; 11.55% from Haryana; 7.91% from Himachal Pradesh; and 10.20% from the other areas and states of India. A comparison of these figures with the equivalent figures for 1969-70 shows that in 1974 patients from the farther districts and states accounted for a larger percentage of patients seen with Chandigarh contributing a much smaller share, thus implying that this catchment area has expanded. A comparison of the general population with several large, consecutive patient sample shows that literates and those from urban background, and to a marginal degree, Sikhs are over represented in the patient samples with no difference in the sex ratio. Such an exercise gives leads as regards socioeconomic correlates of illness.
