The relation between cell adhesion-suspension and cell cycle of S180-V [mouse sarcoma] cell line was studied by time-lapse cinemicrography, mitotic index count, 3H-TdR [thymidine] pulse labeling index, continuous labeling index, labeled mitotic index, unlabeled mitotic index and so on. The suspension and adhesion of the cells vary greatly with age, i.e., the suspension was rich in M-phase and G1-phase cells, in contrast to the adhesion which was rich in S-phase and G2-phase cells. Such a difference in cell age distribution may be due to cyclic variations in cells detachment or adherence. The cells change from adhesion to suspension in M-phase and vice versa in G1-S phase. The changes from suspension to adhesion are influenced by the density and proliferation rate of the cells. Since the cyclic change of adhesion and suspension leads to the natural separation of cells in 2 different phases of the cell cycle, S180-V cell line could be a good model for cell synchronization.
