The changes in endogenous cyto kinin like substances in zea mays seeds during germination

Plant Science Letters 14(3): 259-262

When maize kernels were soaked in water for 4 h and became swollen the level of free cytokinins (free bases and their ribosides) was increased as compared with the level in dry seeds. There was a decrease in free cytokinin when the period of imbibition was extended to 24-48 h. The bound cytokinins (the ribotides) decreased slightly after 4 h and then maintained a constant low level during the whole period of swelling. The level of free cytokinins was always higher than the level of bound cytokinins. Most of the cytokinins detected were associated with compound(s) that cochromatographed with zeatin and zeatinriboside. The bioassay used to detect cytokinin activity was the Amaranthus test. The endogenous content of cytokinins in maize is discussed.
