The chronic effects of some allelochemics on the larval development and adult reproductivity of the cotton leafworm spodoptera littoralis
The cotton leafworm S. littoralis is a polyphagous insect, accordingly its larvae are subjected to a wide spectrum of allelochemics. The present investigation attempted to clarify the chronic effect of allelochemics rerepresented by gallic acid and coumarin on the rate of growth, survival, pupation and adult quality of S. littoralis. Gallic acid inhibited survival, growth and pupation, especially at higher concentrations. Adult fertility and longevity were decreased by increasing gallic acid concentrations. Coumarin, completely inhibited the development of larvae at higher concentrations and affected the growth and adult fertility at lower dosages.
