The mortality from diabetes has been on the increase in recent years and it is expected to remain one of the important diseases among adults. Besides its mortality, the chronicity of the disease has a serious influence over the labor force and over home life. Diabetes has thus become a disease which poses serious problems from the viewpoint of public health. It is particularly important to control border-line diabetes since this is the most frequent type. The present study was a follow-up survey of border-line diabetes in industrial establishments over a period of 5 yr. It was found very difficult to control border-line diabetes for a long period; those who could be followed up for 5 yr amounted to only 11%. On the basis of the glucose tolerance test, border-line diabetes accounted for more than 50% of the patients. Seven percent of the patients with border-line diabetes were restored to normal through control and guidance, and 50% showed signs of improvement. There was no relation between occupation and changes in glucose tolerance. Control of obesity had a good effect on glucose tolerance in 50%; it also improved the cholesterol level. Industrial establishment need to have a professional in control of diabetes.
