The cytogenetic effect of the alkylating mutagens EMS [ethyl methane sulfonate] and MNU [N-nitroso-N-methyl urethane] on wheat species with different ploidy levels (2x, 4x, 6x) was studied by anaphase and metaphase analyses. The effect of wheat species increases with ploidy level. Highest percentage of aberrations was recorded in T. aestivum L. (2n = 6x = 42). A clearly manifested localization of the breaks was observed in the terminal sectors of T. monococcum L. (2n = 2x = 14). In MNU treated T. monococcum metaphase analysis provides greater possibilities, quantitatively and qualitatively for recording the induced aberrations.
