The development of vegetation on urban fallow surfaces examples from berlin west germany

The development of vegetation on urban fallow surfaces examples from berlin west germany

Tuexenia (6): 75-98

The development of vegetation on urban ruderal sites is described by some examples. The sites differ in their age (2- until 30-year old vegetation), composition of the dominant substrate (calcaric regosols, sand, hortisols, railway ballast) and use (foundation pit, urban waste lands, railway territory). The vegetation of a foundation pit (Sisymbrion, Dauco-Melilotion) is documentated by releves. Character and direction of succession are discussed and illustrated in a diagram (Fig. 1). For the single sites informations are given concerning the number of species, some floristic details, average indicator values of moisture and nitrogen and results of similarity analysis. Finally, some aspects of the protection of urban ruderal sites in regard to their function for recreation and nature conservation in cities are discussed.
