Diagnosis of [human] chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) can be decided on the basis of characteristic blood pattern and bone marrow changes, including an increase in eosinophils and basophils, after several months in the preleukemic phase. Deviations from the usual lessening of leukocyte alkaline phosphatase activity are discussed. Attention is called to the symptomatic appearance of Gaucher and other storage cells. Myelofibroses and mixed patterns of granulocytes and megakaryocytes are frequently observed in bone marrow cells. Cytogenetic findings indicate that heterogeneous types of cells may appear during or before the blast crisis.
