The diagnostic basis for cancer registration in Norway

, : The diagnostic basis for cancer registration in Norway. Tidsskrift for den Norske Laegeforening 107(32): 2865-2868

An increase from 87.7% to 89.7% of all cancer cases with histological verification was demonstrated between the periods 1974-78 and 1979-83. The increase was particularly observed for cancers of the stomach (7.8%), lungs (4.7%), prostate (4.0%) and colorectum (3.2%). For tumors of the central nervous system a decrease of cases with histological verification was demonstrated (-5.4%). Cancers incidentally observed by autopsy or given on death certificates only amounted to 1% of all cancer cases (1979-83). Small differences were demonstrated between the five health regions of Norway concerning the diagnostic basis for cancer registration, but marked differences between patients over and under the age of 70 years were found for most cancer localizations.
