The diagnostic value of gastric mill structure as taxonomic character on the classification of crabs brachyura crustacea
Based on the comparative anatomy of the gastor of 51 species belonging to 13 families of Brachyura, the author suggested that the character of gastric mill's structure can be used as a useful taxonomic character on the classification of crabs. The character is difference in morphological structure on urocardiac, zygocardiac and pterocardiac ossicles of the gastric mill which are constant for all member of a given family, genus or species. The structure of the gastric mill, furthermore, is related to adaptation to food. So the present paper evaluates the taxonomic character both on the morphological and the functional aspects and demonstrates the theoretical and practical value of the gastric mill's structure on the diagnosis of the species and the definition of genera and families.
