The duration of closed cell stage in worker brood of danish honey bees apis mellifera l. in relation to increased resistance to the varroa mite varroa jacobsoni oud

Queens were introduced into several observation hives containing workers taken from a single colony. The time of cell closing was recorded by photographic throughthe panes of the hives after which the combs were incubated at 34 .+-. 1/2.degree. C and 40-60% RH [relative humidity]. The time of emergence of the bees (i.e. first piercing of cell cappings) was recorded by photographing. As influences from variations in temperature, from quality and quantity of larval food and from number, age and type of nurse bees were kept constant, the variations in duration of closed cell stage are regarded as being determined by heredity. Duration of closed cell sage in offspring from queens of different lines varied more than 1.15 days and more than 0.72 days between offspring from sister queens. No queens were inseminated. The results indiate that selection for quick hereditary determined development is a possible solution in the struggle against the Varroa mite.
