Abscisic acid (ABA) stimulated the growth and development of the root system including adventitious roots of the hypocotyl, the formation and growth of the lateral shoots of the cotyledonary node and to a less extent the growth of the main shoots of axenically cultivated 17 day old P. coccineus seedlings. Similar data as in intact plants were obtained with root cultures, excised segments of the main roots, internodes and lateral shoots and with callus cultures derived from internode tissue. The optimum concentration appeared to be 10-7-5 .times. 10-6 M ABA. Only in the case of root cultures, excised root segments and adventitious roots of intact plants, ABA inhibited growth weakly at high concentrations. In runner beans ABA does not play a significant role as an inhibitor of growth and development.
