The postradiation effect of caffeine and actinomycin D on the appearance of chromosome aberrations in a culture of human peripheral blood lymphocytes was studied after .gamma.-irradiation at various stages of the cellular cycle. Irradiation of the cell culture at doses of 200 rad was effected before the beginning of incubation (stage Go), after 20 h (stage G1), 37 h (stage S) and in a dose of 100 rad after 47 h (stage G2) from the moment of incubation. Caffeine had no effect on the appearance of chromosome aberrations in irradiation of stages Go-G1, but increased their number in stages S and G2, while the effect was most expressed in the stage of DNA synthesis. Actinomycin D manifested an effect only in stage S. The general number of chromosome aberrations in postradiation action approximately doubled the control level.
