The effect of feeding type and sex upon the highest average and lowest daily gain per fattening days during the fattening of young cattle 5 to 11 months old

The effect of feeding type and sex upon the highest average and lowest daily gain per fattening days during the fattening of young cattle 5 to 11 months old

Poljoprivredna Znanstvena Smotra 32(42): 315-329

Simmenthal bullocks (37) and 68 heifers were divided into 3 groups fed only mixture (concentrate, 6.92% raw cellulose) and 5 groups fed mixture and hay (9.59-11.30% raw cellulose) to determine the effects of sex and feeding type on daily gain. Daily gains of bullocks were significantly higher in feeding mixture only compared to feeding mixture plus hay. The excellent daily gains of bullocks (1.51 kg with mixture and hay and 1.73 kg with mixture only) point out the good fattening capacity of the domestic Simmenthal. With heifers the daily gains were significantly higher with mixture only compared to feeding mixture plus hay. Although the daily gain capacity of the heifers was generally considerably lower than that of bullocks, the mean highest daily gains of the heifers were favorable, 1.23 kg with mixture and hay and 1.35 kg with mixture only. The possibility of improving the fattening capacity of the domestic Simmental by systematic selection is suggested. Comparison of the daily gain in bullocks and heifers in the 2nd fattening half in relation to the 1st half showed a gradual rise in bullocks in the 2nd half and a considerable decline in the gain of heifers. The gain capacity of heifers in the 2nd half is considerably lower than that of bullocks. Fattening of heifers should be terminated sooner (at an earlier age) than fattening of bullocks.
