The effects of mineral fertilization (P and K; N, P and K) on the production of dry matter and its quality expressed by the content of P, Ca, Mg and Na were studied in the Strazov region, Czechoslovakia, at 3 different altitudes with southern and northern exposure during the period between 1969-1974. The mean yield was 0.98-2.41 tons/ha for the unfertilized variants. The yield increased by 24-145% with P and K fertilization and by 197-450% with N, P and K fertilization. The need for increased P fertilization was emphasized, especially on pastures used for young heifers. The Ca and Mg content of the dry fodder satisfied the standard requirements of the animals. Only 6-33% of the Na requirement is supplied under the given conditions and the addition of Na was strongly recommended.
