The effect of pathogens on seedling establishment in plantago lanceolata l

Seedling mortality caused by damping-off pathogens was investigated in three Plantago lanceolata populations. Seeds were sown on untreated and on pasteurized soil samples. The samples were collected from different sites within the populations of P. lanceolata, both from where the species occurred, as well as from where the species did not occur. High seedling mortality was only observed on soil samples collected in one of the three populations, at sites where P. lanceolata did not occur. The mortality of the seedlings was not associated with a specific fungus, but with a complex of fungal species interacting with other (abiotic) mortality-inducing factors such as soil pH. The importance of damping-off disease as a selective factor in the seeding stage of P. lanceolata is discussed.
