The effect of plant population on the seed yield of sunflower hybrids

The effect of plant population on the seed yield of sunflower hybrids

South African Journal of Plant and Soil 3(4): 161-164

A number of hybrids were tested at three plant populations over two seasons at Ermelo, Sandvet and Warm Baths [South Africa]. The main aim was to determine the ability of sunflower cultivars to compensate for a poor stand. Under low potential conditions the interaction between plant population and cultivars was not significant, indicating that cultivars responded in the same way to plant population. Under medium potential conditions the early maturing cultivars needed higher populations to produce high yields and under high potential conditions plant population was a very important factor in cultivar performance. The cultivars AS 504, SNK 25 and SO 323 performed relatively well over all populations and under high as well as low potential conditions. These cultivars are especially suitable under conditions where low stands may occur.
