The effect of the brandt vole microtus brandti colonies upon vegetation in the caragana steppe of central eastern mongolia

The effect of the brandt vole microtus brandti colonies upon vegetation in the caragana steppe of central eastern mongolia

Polish Ecological Studies 8(1-2): 41-56

Investigations were made of the effect of the Brandt vole (M. brandti Radde, 1861) activity on the growth rate of vegetation, floral composition and their chemical (N, P, K, Ca) composition in steppes of central eastern Mongolia. Over 40% of the steppe area is controlled by this species and its activity does not cause any substantial changes in the overall biomass of vegetation. Significant changes were observed in the species composition in favor of aromatic species and these species less preferred by mammals (e.g., Artemisia sp.). This impact brings about increased concentration of nutrients in plants (e.g., N content rises by 25.5% and K by 8.4%).
