The effect of the forest on the structure of forest steppe soils and accumulation of humus in them

The effect of deciduous forests on the structure and humus accumulation in soils of the forest-steppe zone was studied in models from several areas of the European part of the USSR. The A1 humus horizon in soils beneath deciduous forests was dominated by a high water-stable structure. The percentage of water-stable aggregates in gray forest soils ranged between 75-80%, in isolated cases reaching 90-95%. In cultivated gray soils the structure was deteriorating. Humus accumulation was observed in the A1 horizon of gray forest-steppe soils beneath deciduous trees, while it was absent in cultivated soils formed under the same natural circumstances.
