The endocrine function of gonads in silver foxes during different stages of the reproductive cycle

The testosterone level in the peripheral blood of male and the estradiol level in female silver foxes [Vulpes fulvus] were studied during different stages of the reproductive cycle. The quantities of testosterone and estradiol in peripheral plasma were measured by radioimmunoassay. Maximum levels of testosterone in male blood at the period of sexual activity, i.e., in Jan. (106.3 .+-. 9.1 ng%), and minimum, at the beginning of Sept. (0.1 .+-. 0.1 ng%) were found. In females, at the period of anestrus the plasma estradiol level oscillated from 0.54 .+-. 0.09 to 1.72 .+-. 0.22 ng%. At the beginning of Sept., in contrast to males in which the testosterone level at that period was minimum, in females the peak of blood estradiol was found (2.59 .+-. 0.12 ng%). During proestrus the estradiol level increased and became maximum in late proestrus, 5.22 .+-. 0.41 ng%. The blood estradiol level in females decreased in estrus. [Comparisons were made to dogs.].
