The fine structure of the head-epidermis of juvenile trouts is presented and should provide the base for further investigations on the influence of an anion-active detergent upon this type of tissue (in preparation). The epidermis consists of 5-7 cell-layers, predominantly filament-containing and goblet cells. Chloride cells, lymphocytes and rodlet cells are less abundant. The presence of granules and the lack of a distinct stratification of the epidermis suggests that the epidermis is not fully arranged as has been shown in adult salmonids. In the outer regions electron-dense and electron-light filament-containing cells are discernible. The latter, probably degenerating filament-containing cells, contain electron dense (possible mucigen) vesicles. The skin surface exhibits microridges in a fingerprint-like arrangement. Mature and immature goblet cells are observed in superficial as well as in basal regions of the epidermis. Rodlet cells are rare and contain sacs and rodlets within their cytoplasm.
