The heritability coefficient of heat resistance in hydra oligactis at the optimal temperature of cultivation and during heat acclimation

Heritability of heat resistance of H. oligactis was studied under conditions of optimum temperature (21.degree.-22.degree. C) and during heat acclimation (1, 2, 4, 6, 10 and 24 h after the rise of temperature from 22.5.degree. to 27.5.degree. C). The survival time logarithm (for 35.degree. C) was used as a criterion of heat resistance. At the optimum temperature (12-18 clones were studied) the heritability coefficient is relatively high (h2 = 0.60-0.64). During heat acclimation (12 clones) this coefficient undergoes phase fluctuations; the minimum value was recorded after the animals were kept warm for 24 h. Due to a decrease in the heritability coefficient during heat acclimation.sbd.masking of genetic differences between clones.sbd.genotype selection efficiency is lessened leading to a preservation of genetic diversity in the population.
