The idea of common elements in the structure of animals and plants j e purkyne and t schwann contribution to the discussion on the beginnings of the cell theory

Purkyne described many cells in animal tissues, and in Sept. 1837 he spoke at the Meeting of German Scientists and Physicians in Prague [Czechoslovakia], on the structure of gastric glands and the digestion process. He also discussed the analogy of grains which he found in many glands and other animal tissues, and in plant cells. This led him to a claim in the origin of cell theory. His paper was published in July 1838 in the Isis. In Jan.-April 1838, Schwann published 3 preliminary papers. The main facts, their sequence and later statements are summarized as a basis for a proper appreciation of Purkyne's and Schwann's places in the early history of the cell theory. Purkyne's paper of 1838 (1837) has great importance in the physiology of digestion.
