The confusion surrounding the application of the name F. assa-foetida L. (Umbelliferae) is discussed. In the past the name was wrongly for 2 species: F. foetida and F. narthex. Relevant nomenclature and synonymy is given, along with a summary of distribution, for the 3 spp. A full description is also supplied for F. assa-foetida, a species that is restricted to W and SW Persia.
