Firstly, the authors explain the Ilizarov Technique. The apparatus is an external fixator consisting of Kirschner wires fixed on circular rings. The wires are passed through the bone, and the rings are held together by three threaded bars running parallel to the axis of the bone. The preliminary results of 12 cases are exposed and the authors emphasize the advantages of this method. In severe leg length discrepancy, limb lengthenings are obtained with an small incision for the corticotomy and without internal osteosynthesis or bone grafting. This method seems to be more reliable, better and with a fewer complications than the other techniques. Some indications are discussed: congenital pseudarthrosis and septic pseudarthrosis of long bones.
