The immature stages of alluaudomyia paraspina diptera ceratopogonidae with notes on its biology

The immature stages of alluaudomyia paraspina diptera ceratopogonidae with notes on its biology

Annals of the Entomological Society of America 69(4): 687-690

The immature stages of A. paraspina Wirth are described and illustrated from specimens studied in Maryland [USA]. Color of adults is given from living specimens and all stages are compared with other Nearctic species [A. parva Wirth, A. bella (Coquillett) and A. needhami Thomsen]. Larvae are cannibalistic and are preyed upon by larvae of 2 ceratopogonids, Bezzia glabra (Coquillett) and B. pulverea (Coq.), and a chironomid, Ablabesmyia peleensis (Walley). Larval biology is discussed and evidence for a 2nd generation is presented.
