The influence of different phosphorus supply on phosphorus turnover in growing broiler chicks by means of phosphorus 32 isotope

In two experiments four diets were fed to male broiler chicks from day 10 to 29 of age ad libitum. The basal diet contained 0,32% P from inorganic origin (group IV). All other diets were supplemented up to 0,65% P with Monocalciumphosphate (MCP, group I), MCP + Na-phytate (group II) and Na-phytate (group III). By addition of CaCO3 an equal Ca:P ratio of 1.6:1 was adjusted in the diets. At 14 days of age the chicks were injected with 32P-NaPO4 in the right leg (1,480 KBq). P retention was calculated following the comparative slaughter technqiue. Isotope dilution technique was used to determine endogenous fecal and renal P excretion. From retention and endogenous excretion P turnover within the animal was derived. The following results were obtained: The influence of feed P source on endogenous P excretion is higher than the influence of total P in the diet. Elevated inorganic P content of the diet effects increased P turnover and endogenous excretion. A comparison of relative P excretion and availability of feed P (group I=100) in the four treatments resulted in: 100:67:35:15 or 100:72:36:59, respectively. 29%, 34%, 35% or 64% of available P were retained, respectively. The ratio of relative retention to relative endogenous excretion of absorbed P was 0,41, 0,52, 0,54, 1,78 in the four treatments.
