The intergeneric hybrid notropis cerasinus x phoxinus oreas pisces cyprinidae in the upper roanoke river drainage virginia usa

American Midland Naturalist 98(1): 238-242

Hybrids (4) between the crescent shimer (N. cerasinus) and the mountain redbelly dace (P. oreas) from the upper Roanoke River Drainage, Virgina [USA] are described. The grand average index of all morphological and meristic characters indicates intermediacy between parental species, although some character values were more extreme than those of the parental species. Hybridization probably resulted from synchronous spawning over Nocomis nests.
