The long thoracic nerve and its roots in postfetal life in man

, : The long thoracic nerve and its roots in postfetal life in man. Annales Universitatis Mariae Curie-Sklodowska Sectio D Medicina 37: 275-282

Examination were performed with 262 long thoracic nerves taken from 71 dead women and 60 men whose age ranged from 1 day up to 87 years. The number of the roots of the nerve and their derivation were similar in both sexes on both sides of the body and showed no differences depending on age. High individual variability and asymmetry characterized the internal structure of the long thoracic nerve. The thickness of the nerve and the size of the transversal section of the fascicles were found to have increased in the postfetal life, especially up to 14 years, while the size index of the area of fascicles was found to increase only by about 15 percent. The number of the fascicles showed no dependence on age.
