The lowest singlet state of purine
The 1(.pi.* .rarw. n) transition of purine isolated in inert gas matrices is reported. The transition, which exhibits considerable vibronic structure, appears in the 290-330 nm region of the purine phosphoresence excitation spectrum on the long wavelength side of the 260 nm 1(.pi.* .rarw. .pi.) transition. The transition is analyzed and vibrational assignments for the 1(n, .pi.*) state are given.
