The lysosomes observed by per iodic acid methenamine silver stain in renal tubular epithelium of alloxan induced diabetic rabbits
Morphological changes of the lysosomes were studied in the renal tubular epithelium of diabetic rabbits (induced by i.v. administration of 130 mg of alloxan/kg of body weight). PAM [periodic-acid methenamine silver] stain was administered in the 3rd and 6th mo. after induction of diabetes. The lysosomes in the renal tubular epithelium of alloxan-diabetic rabbits tended to increase in number and were more pronounced in the 6th mo. after induction of diabetes than in the 3rd mo. Ultrastructurally, most lysosomes were secondary ones in nature and revealed positive reaction for PAM stain. The electron density tended to decrease more in the secondary lysosomes than in the primary ones. In the renal tubular epithelium of alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits the lysosomes were increased in number and their contents were composed largely of glycoprotein, of which concentration was lower in the secondary lysosomes than in the primary ones.
