The macro nuclear micro nuclear complex of woodruffia metabolica

, : The macro nuclear micro nuclear complex of woodruffia metabolica. Journal of Ultrastructure Research 54(2): 169-175

A unique relationship is described between the macro- and micronucleus of the ciliated protozoan W. metabolica. The micronucleus resides in the perinuclear space of the macronucleus and has only a single membrane of its own. The inner and outer macronuclear membranes contribute to border the micronucleus in such a way that they become part of the micronuclear envelope. The cytoplasmic face of the micronuclear envelope is perforated by abundant pore complexes, many containing dense granules. The significance of this observation is discussed in the context of present-day ideas regarding micronuclear RNA synthesis. The percentage of the macronuclear envelope occupied by pore complexes is approximately 55%, a value higher than previously described. The morphology of these complexes is described and is similar to those described elsewhere.
