The main components of the anaerobic sediment extract affecting slapy reservoir phyto plankton
During the period from April 1973-March 1974, 4 seasonal experiments were performed in the field. Slapy Reservoir [Czechoslovakia] surface water with its natural phytoplankton assemblage was enriched with an anaerobic sediment extract. Parallel cultures were enriched with the main chemical components of the extract. Elimination of 1 component from each culture, respectively, revealed that phytoplankton populations responded mainly to the P and silicate content of the added extract. The availability of nutrients, nutrient limitation, and the response of different groups, genera or species to different enrichments are discussed. Growth of 2 dominant species of diatoms, Asterionella formosa and Stephanodiscus hantzschii, both isolated from Slapy Reservoir, was tested in the laboratory at various concentrations of PO4-P and sediment extract.
