The maintenance energy requirement of sows
For the determination of the maintenance energy requirement of German Landrace sows, 2 respiration experiments were conducted resulting in 34 complete energy balances derived by the C-N procedure. In one experiment (E.degree.), the feeding level was designed to attain nutritional equilibrium and in the 2nd experiment (E+) to attain positive energy balance. The intake of metabolizable energy corrected to zero energy retention averaged 353 kJ in experiment E.degree. vs. 411 kJ/kg0.75 per day in experiment E+. Both of these energy equilibria, which designate the maintenance requirement, significantly differ and are higher than values derived from fasting experiments. The maintenance energy requirement must be seen in relation to the method of its determination or the physiological state of the animal. The recommended intake of maintenance energy for sows derived in the present study is summarized.
