The metabolism intensity of phospho lipid and neutral glyceride fatty acids in various parts of the brain

The rate of fatty acid metabolism in individual phospholipids and neutral glycerides was studied after injection of 2-14C-acetate. The phospholipids and neutral glycerides isolated from rat brain cortex, cerebral hemisphere white matter, cerebellum and stem were fractionated by TLC. The highest rate of incorporation of 14C into lipids and their fatty acids was in the brain cortex or in cerebellum. Radioactive C was incorporated into neutral lipids 8-10 times more than into the phospholipids. The intensity of metabolism of fatty acids in phospholipids was considerably higher than in neutral glycerides. The specific activity (SA) of fatty acids in phospholipids was 15-40% higher than that of the total phospholipid molecule; it was 2 times smaller than the SA of neutral glycerides.
