The method of determining erythropoietin and its significance in the classification of polycythemias

The method of determining erythropoietin and its significance in the classification of polycythemias

Acta Universitatis Palackianae Olomucensis Facultatis Medicae 111: 299-304

The level of erythropoietin was determined in 69 persons using the method of titration on IRC (polycythemic) white mice. A calibration of 2 international standard samples was carried out. The subjects consisted of 20 healthy persons, 33 polycythemia vera patients, 4 patients with secondary polycythemia, and 2 patients with familial polycythemia. The level of erythropoietin showed a value of 0.48 .+-. 0.10% 59Fe incorporation in healthy persons and polycythemia vera patients. The erythropoietin level in secondary polycythemia was significantly higher. A high level of incorporation of the iron isotope was found in the 2 familial polycythemia cases. The meaning of the determination of erythropoietin for clinical practice was discussed.
